Aquileia Wine Road
The Aquileia Wine Road runs from the Roman town of Aquileia to the fortress town of Palmanova passing through Cervignano del Friuli and reaching the medieval hamlet of Clauiano.
The Aquileia Wine Road associates, wine producers, farms, restaurants and wine bars in order to promote the whole area.
Following the Wine Road everyone will have the possibility of discovering this wonderful area full of history, culture and fascinating nature.
Wineries open their doors to tourists showing them the secrets of their wines while restaurants, farms and wine bars present the typical cuisine of this land.
Wines and typical products
The Aquileia area was well know for wine production and wine trade since Roman times. The most famous wine was Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (Pucinum), according to the tradition the favourite red wine of Livia, second wife of Emperor Augustus.
Along the Aquileia Wine Road you can taste some really fresh white wines such as: Tocai friulano, Malvasia, Sauvignon, Traminer aromatico together with the classic Chardonnay and Pinot grigio. As for red wines you can appreciate Refosco dal peuncolo rosso and of course Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot. Sweet wines lovers will discover Verduzzo Friulano.
Who enjoy good food will have the possibility of tasting many gastronomic peculiarities of this land. You can perfectly combine local wines with ham and salami (made by pork or goose), cheese (cow or goat) and polenta. The land between Grado and Cervignano del Friuli is well know for the quality of its fresh fruit and vegetables, in particular asparagus, peaches and cherries.
