CLIMATE AND SOILS
The production zone of Friuli Aquileia Doc wines in the band of land facing the Grado lagoon and stretching northwards, through Aquileia and Cervignano del Friuli, as far as the historic fortress of Palmanova. Characteristics of soil and climate in this zone have been found to be particularly suitable for grape growing since ancient times. The climate benefits from the closeness of the sea, being constantly ventilated in summer and therefore less humid, and milder in winter with a temperature which rarely falls below 0 °C. The predominantely clay soils with a sandy element wich varies in percentage from area to area were formed by thousands of years of alluvional action, eroding sand, clay and rich mineral deposit of varying composition from the hills. A climate and soils which together, therefore, favour optimal growth of wines and provide ideal conditions for plant equilibrium, the principal factor for producing grapes of the highest quality.
